Sufjan Stevens: "For so long I had used my work as an emotional crutch. And this was the first time in my life where I couldn’t sustain myself through my art. I couldn’t solve anything through my music any more. Maybe I had been manipulating my work over all these years - using it as a defense mechanism or a distraction. But I couldn’t do that any more, for some reason.
I just didn’t feel like I needed to… work through the death of my mother with noise, but with words.
I definitely felt the desire to rewind and return to a more traditional form. You have to cast out your demons and rebel against your traditions and pursue your interests through the adventure of discovery, but you always have to crawl back to the homeland like the prodigal son."

"Free man in Paris"

Είναι σχεδόν αδύνατον για έναν ταλαντούχο μουσικό σαν τον Sufjan Stevens να μην κυκλοφορήσει ή έστω να μη συμμετάσχει σε έναν τουλάχιστον δίσκο κάθε χρόνο. Πέρυσι μας χάρισε το "The avalance" με τραγούδια που δεν κατάφεραν να βρεθούν στο εξαίσιο "Illinois" και ένα ονειρώδες χριστογεννιάτικο box set που θα μας συντροφεύει τις χειμωνιάτικες μέρες. Διέπραξε την παραγωγή και συνείσεφερε στο δίσκο ("These friends of mine", είναι διαθέσιμο μόνο μέσω iTunes, ενώ σύντομα αναμένεται και σε cd) της φίλης του Rosie Thomas, διέθεσε το "Opie's funeral song" στη συλλογή της Asthmatic Kitty (την εταιρεία του) "Mews Too: An Asthmatic Kitty compilation" και διασκεύασε το "Variation on 'Commemorative transfiguration & Communion at Magruder Park'" στη συλλογή αφιέρωμα στον John Fahey. Φέτος ποιεί κάτι ανάλογο με τη διαφορετική μουσική ανάγνωση του "Free man in Paris" της Joni Mitchell. Σε πέντε λεπτά που διαρκεί συναντάμε πνευστά, βιολιά, υπέροχα δεύτερα φωνητικά και όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά των εκλεκτών ενορχηστρώσεών του. Απαραίτητη η ακρόασή του.

Sister Winter

O χαρισματικός Sufjan Stevens ("Όχι πάλι αυτός", θα αναφωνήσουν μερικοί) κυκλοφορεί box set με χριστουγεννιάτικα τραγούδια (σχεδόν τα μισά απο αυτά είναι δικές του συνθέσεις) λίγο πριν το τέλος του 2006 (21 Νοεμβρίου). Κάθε χρόνο έριχνε στο διαδίκτυο και από ένα ΕΡ (δωρεάν) οπότε αποφάσισε να τα συλλέξει όλα, προσθέτοντας όμως μεταξύ άλλων (που δε χρειάζεται να αναφέρω) και ένα καινούργιο EP (ηχογραφήθηκε τον Ιούνιο). Ναι, έχετε απόλυτο δίκιο. Το ίδιο πίστευα και εγώ (παρ' όλο που λατρεύω τους δίσκους του). Οτι δηλαδή δε θα πρόσεφερε τίποτα καινούργιο.

Το πήρα λοιπόν απόφαση. "Δε θα κατεβάσω τίποτα (με το φόβο ότι θα με απαγοήτευαν)", έλεγα όταν διάβασα την είδηση. Πάλι κα*α που δεν πήρα όρκο. Το όνομα του τραγουδιού που με οδήγησε στο να τα αποθηκεύσω όλα στο σκληρό μου δίσκο (και να αναμένω την επίσημη κυκλοφορία, η οποία θα στολίσει τη μουσική μου συλλογή) ήταν το Sister Winter. Πανέμορφο. Διαμάντι. Ξεκινά με τη μελωδία του πιάνου, το Sufjan Stevens να τραγουδάει ψιθυρίζοντας τους στίχους, αιθέρια φωνητικά, έγχορδα και πνευστά να τον συνοδεύουν και να τον οδηγούν στο τελευταίο δίλεπτο του τραγουδιού όπου οι κιθάρες, τα drums και τα πνευστά αποκτούν σταδιακά τον πρώτο λόγο κορυφώνοντας την ένταση λίγο πριν το αργόσυρτο (ιδανικό fade out) οριστικό (αν και δύσκολα δε θα ξαναπατήσετε το play) αντίο.

Εξαιρετικά δημιουργικός και παραγωγικός αποδεικνύεται ο Sufjan Stevens. Σχεδόν κάθε χρόνο βρισκόμαστε στην ευτυχή θέση να απολαμβάνουμε ένα νέο του δισκογραφικό θρίαμβο. Μετά λοιπόν τα αριστουργηματικά "Illinois", "Seven swans", "Michigan" και τα ενδιαφέροντα "Enjoy your rabbit" και "A sun came" ήρθε η σειρά του "The avalance". "Asthmatic Kitty is pleased to announce that we will officially release most of the unused material from the ILLINOIS album, featuring 21 songs, instrumentals, interludes and demos. The album features the original Illinoisemaker players, showcasing James McAlister on drums, Craig Montoro on trumpet, singers Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Katrina Kerns, and several guest appearances by singer Rosie Thomas. The new baby is due in stores July 25, 2006."

The little secret behind the Illinois record is that it was originally conceived as a double album, culminating in a musical collage of nearly 50 songs. But as the project began to develop into an unwieldy epic, common sense weighed in "as did the opinions of others" and the project was cut in half...
Sufjan gleaned 21 useable tracks from the abandoned material, including three alternate versions of Chicago. Some songs were in finished form, others were merely outlines, gesture drawings, or musical scribbles mumbled on a hand-held tape recorder. Most of the material required substantial editing, new arrangements or vocals. A careful listener may uncover the obvious trend on this record: almost every song on the Illinois album has a counterpart on the outtakes.

Πριν λίγες μέρες κυκλοφόρησε ο δίσκος ("Return to the sea") των Islands (από μέλη των Unicorns). Μετά από αρκετές ακροάσεις βεβαιώθηκα απόλυτα ότι η αγορά του κρίνεται απαραίτητη. Ακούστε ένα δείγμα.

Και τέλος αξίζει να αναφέρουμε ότι οι Franz Ferdinand (εκτός από headliners στο φετινό Rockwave festival) κυκλοφόρησαν σε single το "The fallen" από τον πρόσφατο (πανέμορφο) δίσκο τους "You could have it so much better". Τα παρακάτω τραγούδια συνοδεύουν το cd.
