Τα 'Not for want of trying' και 'Sing the word hope in four-part harmony' προσήμαιναν ακριβώς αυτό που θα κατόρθωναν οι Maybeshewill με την τρίτη κυκλοφορία τους. Ένα ασύγκριτα εξαίσιο ηχητικό σκηνικό διαρκών, απρόσμενων και ανατρεπτικών ρυθμικών εναλλαγών με τα τύμπανα να πάλλονται αδιάκοπα, το πιάνο να εξυφαίνει λιτές, αλλά εξαίρετες μελωδίες, τις κιθάρες να διανοίγουν διαύλους επικοινωνίας με την ένταση, τις παραμορφώσεις και το θόρυβο, καθώς ηλεκτρονικά, ξυλόφωνο και synths στο παρασκήνιο ισχυροποιούν την παραμυθένια ομορφιά των συνθέσεων, με την απουσία των samples με αποσπάσματα ταινιών να περνάει απαρατήρητη, χάρη στην εμπνευσμένη προσθήκη εγχόρδων από μέλη των Her name is Calla, έστω και αν οι συμμετοχές δεν περιορίζονται μόνο σε αυτούς και στη λαμπρή ροή, καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια του 'I was here for a moment, then I was gone'.

'To the skies from a hillside'

Μετά από δύο δισκογραφικές κυκλοφορίες ("Not for want of trying" και "Sing the word hope in four-part harmony") που άφησαν το αποτύπωμά τους στη μνήμη μας οι Maybeshewill παρουσιάζουν το πρώτο δείγμα που ξεπήδησε από τις ηχογραφήσεις του τρίτου δίσκου τους. Το 'To the skies from a hillside' σε παγιδεύει με ασύγκριτο τρόπο μέσα στις διαρκείς εναλλαγές του ρυθμού και του ύφους του, δίνοντας πνοή σε σκοτεινά ελεγειακές εικόνες και πληθώρα συναισθημάτων. Το πιάνο εξυφαίνει θαυμάσιες, λιτές μελωδίες με την εμφάνιση σκόρπιων synths και ηλεκτρονικών, καθώς τα drums πάλλονται ακατάπαυστα και οι κιθάρες αναπτύσσουν πολλαπλές διόδους επικοινωνίας με το θόρυβο, οδηγώντας κλιμακωτά σε ηχητικές εκρήξεις. Υπέροχο!

Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work, or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth. Banks are going bust. Shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street, and there's nobody anywhere seems to know what to do. There’s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat. We sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had 15 homicides and 63 violent crimes, as if that’s the way it is supposed be. We know things are bad. Worse than bad. They’re crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don’t go out any more. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we live in is getting smaller. All we say is "Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV, my steel-belted radials and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone." Our history will be what we make of it. And if there are any historians about 50 or 100 years from now - and there should be preserved the kinescopes of one week of all three networks - they will there find, recorded in black and white and in color, evidence of decadence, escapism, and insulation from the realities of the world in which we live. We are currently wealthy, fat, comfortable, and complacent. We have a built-in allergy to unpleasant or disturbing information. Our mass media reflect this. But unless we get up off our fat surpluses and recognize that television in the main is being used to distract, delude, amuse, and insulate us, then history will take its revenge and retribution will not limp in catching up with us.


It may be that the human race is doomed, never to learn from its mistakes. We are the only animals on this globe who periodically set out to slaughter each other for the best, the noblest, the most inescapable of reasons. We know better. It may be that our empire, too, is doomed - like all those that have gone before it - to continue to spew and waste its best blood on foreign soil, no matter what we say or do in this place, or think, or believe, or have learned from history. We are young, confident, affluent, and have no memory of tougher times. We’ve grown up in an era of never ending financial growth, and have expected things to stay that way. We’ve grown up in owner occupied homes with total acceptance of technology, global warming and terrorism. Our whole society has been based on consumerism for the past 15 years, making us dream consumers, yet we don’t know the difference between a credit card and a debit card, and we have no idea how much a pint of milk costs. On average we have 800 illegally downloaded songs, and 1 on 8 of us spends more than 100 pounds a month on our mobile phone bill. We’ve never read a newspaper, and we’ve never used our chance to vote. We allow our governments to make decisions without giving us all the facts. They send troops abroad who will die in order that we can steal resources from the people who have them. People who meant us little or no harm until we invaded their country. We allow those troops to commit horrendous atrocities and hang our alleged enemies for much less. We’ve spent years entrusting our futures to our parents, our governments, the banks and the corporations who have continually lobbied for their own interests, and we’ve let them make selfish decisions that have left our society teetering on the edge of ruin. We’re blinded from the information that would really shock us by stories of sex and sleeze which doesn’t make the smallest difference to our lives, and so we have no desire to do anything about the things that really do. We’ve watched as greed wipes billions of the worlds stock markets, destroys jobs and lives, and proves that capitalism is just as corruptible by human nature as communism. These are tough times but we seek solace in our friends and Co-Conspirators, we make small differences in each other’s lives, and dream that we can make real progress.

I had an experience. I can't prove it, I can't even explain it, but everything that I know as a human being, everything that I am tells me that it was real. I was given something wonderful, something that changed me forever. A vision of the universe, that tells us, undeniably, how tiny, and insignificant and how rare, and precious we all are. A vision that tells us that we belong to something that is greater then ourselves, that we are *not*, that none of us are alone! I wish I could share that. I wish, that everybody, if only for one moment, could feel that awe, and humility, and hope. That continues to be my wish.

Μπροστά σε ένα περιορισμένο κοινό (περίπου 150 άτομα συγκεντρώθηκαν στο Principal) οι Maybeshewill αποδείχθηκαν απολαυστικά θορυβώδεις χάρη στα drums και στις κιθάρες με τις metal αποχρώσεις. Επέλεξαν κομμάτια από τις δύο δισκογραφικές τους κυκλοφορίες ("Not for want of trying" και "Sing the word hope in four-part harmony") με τα υπέροχα samples από αποσπάσματα ταινιών, χαρίζοντάς μας ένα ωριαίο, συναυλιακό ελιξίριο αναζωογόνησης. Μοναδικό ψεγάδι η έλλειψή μουσικού που θα αναλαμβάνει να παίξει πλήκτρα (καθοριστική η συμβολή τους στα μελωδικά σημεία), τα οποία και μόνο ήταν προηχογραφημένα. Μπορεί να μην είναι σπουδαίοι σαν τους 65daysofstatic, αλλά πρόκειται για ένα πολύ καλό συγκρότημα με προοπτικές. Παρά το λιγοστό κόσμο έδειξαν ενθουσιασμένοι με την παρουσία τους στη Θεσσαλονίκη και μετά το τέλος του set τους έλαβαν παρατεταμένα χειροκροτήματα.

Οι Crippled black phoenix με 8 μέλη επί σκηνής είχαν πιο πλούσιο ήχο (και διάθεση για επικοινωνία). Με βάση την ακουστική κιθάρα και τα φωνητικά του Joe Volk, μεγαλύτερης διάρκειας και με ορχηστρική αισθητική συνθέσεις, οι οποίες κλιμακώνονταν σταδιακά (με την έμπνευση να αντλείται από κλασικά και proggressive rock συγκροτήματα της δεκαετίας του '70) και απαιτούσαν την προσοχή του ακροατηρίου. Μουσική χωρίς περιορισμούς, με διαφορετικές εκφάνσεις του ήχου, με τα πλήκτρα και το τσέλο να χαρίζουν λάμψη στις ενορχηστρώσεις. Παρουσίασαν ένα νέο τραγούδι, με τίτλο "Troublemaker" (ξεκινούν ηχογραφήσεις στις αρχές του 2010) και δύο διασκευές, η μία στο "Bells of the river" του Jeffrey Lee Pierce (σύντομα θα κυκλοφορήσει tribute cd) και η άλλη σε ένα πασίγνωστο ελληνικό τραγούδι. Στο φινάλε αύξησαν την ένταση με τα "444" και "Burnt Reynolds" (με τη συμμετοχή του κοινού), ενώ για encore επιφύλαξαν το σχεδόν 20λεπτο, εξαιρετικό "Τime of ye life/Βorn for nothing/Paranoid arm of the narcoleptic empire".

"Counting the days, pacing the sky, holding every breath I had left in time..."

Ένα χρόνο μετά το "Not for want of trying" οι Maybeshewill επέστρεψαν με πιο σκοτεινή διάθεση. Στο "Sing the word hope in four-part harmony" οι θορυβώδεις, με metal αποχρώσεις κιθάρες και τα drums συνεχίζουν να καλπάζουν, κλιμακώνοντας την ένταση και να συνυπάρχουν με το πιάνο, τα πλήκτρα και τα ηλεκτρονικά (επηρεασμένοι από τους μοναδικούς 65daysofstatic). Σημαντικό στοιχείο, τα υπέροχα, εύστοχα και σε μεγαλύτερο αριθμό samples με φωνητικά (και πλήθος μηνυμάτων). Μέσα Σεπτεμβρίου στην Αθήνα για δύο εμφανίσεις! Ζήτω!



Τα έντεκα μουσικά βελάκια (συνήθως τρίλεπτης διάρκειας) του "Now we can see" πετυχαίνουν ακριβώς (ή έστω λίγο πιο δίπλα) το κέντρο του στόχου (κερδίζοντας τον ακροατή). Κιθάρα, μπάσο και drums (από τους The Thermals) σε πιο pop φόρμες και ελαφρώς μειωμένη ένταση (σε σχέση με το έξοχο "The body, the blood, the machine") με punk δυναμική, στιχουργική μαεστρία (&καθαρά φωνητικά από τον Hutch Harris) και συνθετική συνοχή.



Οι The Low frequency in stereo αποκωδικοποιούν στο "Futuro" τη συνταγή της μουσικής επιτυχίας (ενώ παράλληλα τρυπώνουν στο καταφύγιο των συνθετικών αναμνήσεών μας). Οι μελωδίες χορεύουν στο άψογα φωτισμένο σκηνικό τους, το πλήθος των διαφορετικών ρυθμών, οι καταδύσεις σε ποικίλα μουσικά είδη και οι δεξιότητες τους εκπλήσσουν, οι λεπτομέρειες αγκαλιάζουν απολαυστικά τα τραγούδια τους και η δημιουργικότητά τους αναπνέει θαυμάσια.



Σαν ηφαίστειο που εκρήγνυται (ο ομώνυμος, πρώτος δίσκος των And so I watch you from afar)! Η ένταση επαναστατεί και προκαλεί εκκωφαντικό θόρυβο, οι κιθάρες σηκώνουν τις σημαίες, τα post rock και metal στοιχεία μπλέκονται σε καβγάδες (σε κάποιες στιγμές επικρατεί η γαλήνη) και οι νέες μυρωδιές ορμούν να καταβροχθίσουν εκείνες τους παρελθόντος. Περιοδεύουν με τους Maybeshewill!

'Not for want of trying'

Έχοντας ολοκληρώσει τη διαδικασία του mastering για το νέο τους EP και σε αναμονή του νέου δίσκου τους, με τίτλο "The hawk is howling" οι πολυαγαπημένοι μου Mogwai αποφάσισαν να κατευνάσουν την περιέργεια και την ανυπομονησία μας (πετυχαίνοντας όμως το αντίθετο), ενώ παράλληλα θα προωθούσαν τις κυκλοφορίες της δισκογραφικής τους εταιρείας Rock action. Αποτέλεσμα; Ένα cd με 14 επιλογές τραγουδιών (το οποίο συνοδεύει το τεύχος Απριλίου του περιοδικού Plan B), όπου και συμπεριλαμβάνεται μία δική τους σύνθεση (όπως ήταν αναμενόμενο, ποτισμένη με την ανυπέρβλητη ορχηστρικής τους γοητεία), η οποία θα μπορούσε να βρίσκεται είτε στο "Rock action", είτε στο "Happy songs for happy people".

Αν και ο ήχος τους θυμίζει πιο έντονα εκείνον των σπουδαίων 65daysofstatic, γεγονός που από μόνο του αποτελεί κίνητρο για την ακρόασή του αποτελεί την ιδανική συντροφιά για να κυλήσει γρηγορότερα ο χρόνος. Απολαύστε δείγματα από το θαυμάσιο 'Not for want of trying'.
